Welcome to Royal Stag Preserve

February 2025 Newsletter

The snow lies deep, muffling the land in a quiet only winter can bring. The trees stand bare, the fields rest, and the only movement comes from the wind and the creatures who know this land as home. The hunts have paused, but the work never truly stops. This season isn’t just about waiting—it’s about preparation. Just as the bowhunter draws back before the release, we’re using this time to plan, refine, and set our sights on what’s ahead.

With Phase 2 of the Whiteford property fresh in our minds, we’re taking the lessons learned from Phase 1 and shaping something even better. When the thaw comes, here’s what’s in store:

  • Frost-seeding switchgrass—laying the foundation now so the land thrives when the warmth returns.
  • Prepping land & replanting crops—because stewardship isn’t just about what we take, but what we give back.
  • Shaping the pond near the 5-stand—water is life, and a well-placed pond makes all the difference.
  • Graveling roads—because good ground beneath your boots (or your tires) makes every journey smoother.
  • Clearing poplar shoots—keeping the land open, balanced, and wild.
  • Burning woodpiles—fire resets the land, and with the help of the local fire department, we’ll clear the way for what’s next.

And while we wait for the thaw, we’ve got work to do in town. This weekend, February 7th & 8th, we’ll be at the First Calvary Sportsman’s Show. We’ll have 11 folks there on Friday and 3 on Saturday. If you plan to be there, let us know—it’s always good to shake hands, share stories, and stand alongside those who know the call of the wild like we do.

Winter is a time to reflect, to sharpen, to appreciate the road behind and anticipate the one ahead. But make no mistake—the best days are always the ones yet to come. The thaw will come. The green will return. The fields will be alive again. And when they are, we’ll be ready.

Until then, stay warm, stay sharp, and we’ll see you soon.
